What to do in the first hour after a scam

Work down the list in order. It is not your fault, and acting quickly helps.

  1. Stop all contact. Do not send anything more, whatever is promised or threatened.
  2. If money left a bank account or card, call the bank now on the number on your card (in the UK, 159 reaches many banks).
  3. From a device you trust, change your e-mail password and sign out of other sessions.
  4. Change passwords on any other account that may be exposed, and switch on two-factor authentication.
  5. If you shared a recovery phrase or gave remote access, treat the remaining funds as at risk and secure them at once.
  6. Remove any app the fraudster asked you to install, and disconnect the device from the internet if you suspect malware.
  7. Save evidence: screenshots, website addresses, wallet addresses, transaction references, names and numbers.
  8. Report it through an official channel (see evergreenstudy.com/report-fraud/) and write down the reference number.
  9. Tell someone you trust, and expect fake "recovery" offers. Ignore them.

Official bodies never charge victims to investigate or to give funds back.
