Protecting a recovery phrase
Secret, readable and recoverable — check all three.
Or press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac). The printout leaves out menus and adds the site name, address and date.
- The phrase was generated by wallet software, not chosen by me or given to me by someone else.
- It is written by hand, in order, with each word numbered and checked.
- There is no photo, screenshot, scan, cloud file, e-mail or notes-app copy anywhere.
- There are at least two copies, kept in separate private places.
- The copies are protected from water and heat.
- Nobody else has seen the words, and I have never typed them into a website, form or chat.
- If I use an extra passphrase, it is stored separately from the words.
- A trusted person knows that a backup exists and how to get help, without knowing the words.
- I have a yearly date to check that each copy is still there and readable.
Nobody legitimate will ever ask for these words: not support, not officials, not friends.
We will never ask for your recovery phrase, keys or passwords. General safety education, not financial advice. Free to print and share for non-commercial use.
